Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

So you know, this applies to all meat, not just seafood. This is what kosher meat is. A happy animal makes for a happy meal. Drain the blood and kill it fast.
I couldn't eat sushi at all until I moved to a bigger city, which has a much larger asian population.
And I am extremely picky about chicken, and frankly cannot eat red meat.
You can taste the suffering.
Just FYI, kosher is just a way of slaughtering coming from the Bible, it's not particularly humane to the animal.
Um, Kobi beef.
FYI, the procedure in the Bible was basic instructions on how to make sure animals were killed, still delicious, and avoided as much pain as possible.
Whatever the reason, it is one of the more humane methods. It is specifically designed to cause a rapid drop in blood pressure that leads to rapid unconsciousness and death.
Whatever the motivation, other than using chemical sedation, it is one of the most humane ways to kill an animal.
I agree a quick death was the design intent, but as applied in modern kosher factories the letter of the law has been stretched to break the spirit. Things like hanging cows upside down so the guy with the killing knife could find their jugulars more quickly is not humane to the animals. And the non-kosher modern standard for cows of a bolt to the head is even faster than bleeding out a jugular. Still humane concerns over miss rates, but at least for cows I don't think kosher is any better.
(Side note that other required parts of kosher meat like salting to draw out blood and removing the ligament Jacob tore when wrestling with the angel have, as post-death activities, no relationship to humaneness of slaughter.)
Bro, this has nothing to do with modern Kosher laws: this has to do with basic biology.
Fucking hell, Christians think some dude was bouyant as fuck. That's not really the topic.
I grew up reform Jewish and knew about keeping kosher but never did myself, and never appreciated the actual taste difference in deli meats was due to the stress hormones.
