I didn't know what imposter cards were so I looked it up. For those who don't know, its an add-on that converts complex meshed into a shader that renders on top of a single face. Pretty cool technology. I wonder how it compares in performance. Do pure shader based approaches avoid the rendering cost of even a low LOD mesh?
Here's the guy I'm talking about, he's got reflections and raytracing and all sorts working in them. His talk (for Blender Con) was only uploaded last week. He gets into the render to times:
