It's hilarious to me when people whine about GMOs, we've literally done this to all our food.
That's like shitting on people who whine about AI because scientists have been using machine learning for awhile now.
It's not the *technology" most people have a problem with. GMO may have a more open definition but most people are "whining" about GMO companies like Monsanto whose practices are destroying the earth
My baby boomer mom doesn't even know who Monstanto is. She just hears "genetically modified" and believe it means that eating it will modify her genes or something.
It took me years to get this joke
In fairness I was a kid when I first heard it
Then they aren't complaining about GMOs, they're complaining about Monsanto's practices.
Really depends on who "they" are. The crunchy all organic crowd don't give a shit who's making GMO foods they simply think "natural" is automatically better.
Yep, I don't have a problem with the concept of genetically modified food as such, but the way it's being applied in industry has some frankly terrifying implications (terminator seeds, copywritten genetic material).
That this got watered down into "GMO food is bad for you, personally, to eat" is very annoying. That now people are like "GMO food isn't bad for you, so there are obviously no other issues with GMOs" is even more annoying. Like. Sorry this is more complicated than "YES/NO"?
It reminds me of when people are like "omg fuck organic food, it's not actually healthier for you" ignoring that a lot of the benefits of organic food are more things like. "Local amphibians and fish not dying." Not everything is about you and your diet! I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
Strong disagree. Most anti-GMO people I know are super conservative and see no issues with corporations destroying the environment
we crossed closely related plants with each other. GMO goes way beyond this.
Yeah, try looking up how much fucking virus DNA is injected into our genome.

I'd like to share a revelation I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to another area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.
How so?
My issue with GMO is Monsanto. Other than that, I don't care.
