Mr Brown smashed his head off the road and suffered serious head injuries including a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. Cowardly Hedley then left the 34-year-old cyclist lying unconscious in the middle of the road before getting back into his car and driving off.

Hedley, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, subsequently found out police had put out an appeal to find the motorist involved and he handed himself into a local station two days later. Hedley pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Brown to his severe injury, permanent impairment and to the danger of his life when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, September 22.

Shit, that’s a really bad outcome for the cyclist! Poor dude

Mate of mine died like that. Skull is very thin at the back of the head

Hits on the head are a roll of the dice: nothing, concussions, death are all options…

Don't forget contusions the biker got a contusion.

I got a super bad concussion when I fell and hit the back of my head on some concrete a while back. It took nearly three weeks for my symptoms to go away. I got really lucky I didn't get anything more serious. We were concerned that I permanently damaged my occipital lobe because my visual issues were not improving. Thankfully I got better, but goddamn. I can't imagine a brain injury as severe as that guy's. It's terrifying.

"Permanent impairment" from a violent assault, huh? What's a good punishment for that?

That cyclist will be affected for his entire life. I feel like the assailant should also be affected for his entire life.

I hope Joseph pays all of Iain's medical bills and living costs for the rest of his life.

This is the UK, there aren't any medical bills. He should and likely will be made to lay for loss of earnings and any additional support he might need.

Are you sure? French social security makes any responsible third party pay for everything, and insurance doesn't usually cover crimes.

[–] zwerg@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most people don't have any insurance to cover this precisely because the NHS will always pick up the bill. I've never heard of any criminal getting a bill for medical charges they've caused. Here in Germany, its all personal insurance - albeit strictly regulated. Maybe that's how it works in France?

Y'all aren't required to carry liability insurance to drive? I know in the US it's because of costs to the victim, but hell, the NHS deserves to take the cost of treatment from people who hurt others

[–] zwerg@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

You need insurance to drive... but this wasn't an accident and he wasn't even in the car. Very unlikely it would cover him for anything at all.
