Spending $1000 on hard drives isn't very cheap either
You don't need to. Just download, watch, delete. Download again if you like. Save only what's special.
I could buy more than 16 TB of storage with $1k. I probably only have half of that over more than a decade of stocking up. And I store a library of well over a thousand movies, a few dozen entire tv shows and a running set of ongoing shows that I automatically download, watch, and delete when done. I have only used a fraction of that storage. Maybe half.
I only keep so much for my shared plex server. And there is no reason that you even need do all of that. You can keep a much smaller pre-downloaded library. Just download, watch and delete anything you want. You could store dozens of hours worth of 1080p video on less than 100GB. I just recently bought a 32 GB flashdrive for $20.
And I haven't used any, so I can't comment on the quality, but there is open source software that lets you stream videos to your browser straight from a torrent magnet without downloading to storage at all.
It really isnt that big of a commitment to buy a bit of hardware. And it pays dividends over time in savings.
