I actually think that some measure of asceticism for professional revolutionaries is useful both to keep sight on the primary goal and for propaganda, but it shouldn't be expected from masses.
I swear some of these people think that all leftists are some sort of Khmer Rogue fan cult.
The interesting part is that Khmer Rouge managed to somewhat improve the life of peasants, while utterly destroying the life of urban dwellers, so even them aren't really an example.
