They didn't fuck it ip, it was just ineffective.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 6 points 9 hours ago

I’d say it’s a combination. Whiskey Pete fucked it up because he thought munitions and testosterone win wars, and once he gimped the supply lines it didn’t take much for Iran to fuck it up and then sit back and watch as the navy fell apart.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 19 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Well, we still don't really know the damage that has been done to all the bases and equipment in that region. It is quite possible that Iran did indeed fuck up the greatest military on earth. The fact that I am writing this would be unbelievable to myself 10 years ago. What an idiotic disaster this "expedition" has been

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Trump and his people literally didn't believe there would be counterattacks. Just like how Israel does with literally every new war, just like Russia did with Ukraine, they just assumed an immediate win and that the target country would surrender under pressure. Then they don't know what to do but to keep attacking when that fails.

Iran were able to destroy bases because those bases were intentionally left undefended. They didn't strengthen the air defense to allow themselves to keep supplying ships. They assumed none of that would be needed.

Because they're morons who all should be executed for crimes against humanity.

I agree with this take. I'm sure the military advised the admin on this issue. There is an element in this idiotic administration that wants a biblical religious war in the middle east on hopes of bringing back their Messiah. We live in delusional times

The reason that that big carrier that was in the news recently was starving its personnel and all that was because most of the US's bases in the area were destroyed/damaged, so there was no way to resupply. That part was kinda kept quiet in the media, because it makes the US Military look so pathetically bad (worse than their current perception.)

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

This is somewhat of an exaggeration... the US has plenty of cargo planes that can land on a carrier and enough local airfields nearby for a quick stop to refuel ...
But this requires a thoroughly set up plan for logistics and that's where the higher ups don't see the need (nor for making a plan of action in this war in the first place, they just raced out the door shooting wildly)...

The problem lies in the complete bubble the higher ups are living in, hegseth has access to unlimited food and drink and is the exact type to waive complaints away by uttering a statement in the vein of "let them eat cake". Most of the other staff left over by now at the Pentagon are bootlickers and yes men who live in the same bubble of awesomeness, too afraid to fall out of it. Same with trump, surrounded by yes men afraid of telling him otherwise, because anyone who does will be punished, so trump is fully enveloped in the same bubble of awesome and thinks everything he says or thinks up is the best tasting shit ever...

It's kinda weird how the US is becoming a caricature, not of itself but of China where no one dares to take responsibility when things end disastrous and to save face of all involved a full on positive lie is spread to cover up the disaster. Heck the US is racing towards a Social Credit system with intense data gathering on every citizen like China has been building.

Meanwhile China is becoming a modern variant of a path the USA has been nudged away from: renewable energy based, leaders in AI and robotics and automated factories, Electric Vehicles as main mode of transportation, rapidly reducing pollution (anyone remember the pictures of smog clouds in Beijing of the 90s and 00s? Hasn't happened in a while there, but the US will get that phenomenon in the near future).

And then there is the enormous military growth, from hypermodern systems to upcoming airfighters that keep up with the USs latest offerings, who will buy expensive American weaponry that will be locked down with DRM if the Chinese build and upgrade faster?

Back on topic ... it all started with the utter disregard for the situation of the Iranian government, they would NEVER just surrender because trump said so nor because of a few bombs, if the folks in power in Iran ever dropped their weapons a very angry mob would lynch AND quarter all of them alive, so they can't just step aside, this all next to hegseth just plain underestimating the iranian abilities on home turf because he lives inside that awesomeness bubble.

I think starting a war with almost no objective doesn’t help.

Honestly it contributes to appear Trump’s only goal is weakening the US.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 4 points 10 hours ago

He is incompetent and evil. He has gotten a lot of people killed over nothing. I don't think his goal is to weaken the US (if it is, maybe he isn't incompetent after all), but simply to use his position to enrich himself and stroke his ego. The USA was supposed to be a mighty military power and home to a people that would fight to maintain their freedom. Instead, the military has shown the world how impotent it really is, and the rugged individualist citizens of this country simply bent over for him and the ultra wealthy class. Pathetic.

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

They had all the gear but no idea.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 2 points 10 hours ago

Just like the Russians. Cold war era tactics don't work anymore, it looks like.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

It was as ineffective as usual (at military goals - plenty effective at destroying civilian infrastructure and murdering schoolgirls).

But also Iran absolutely did fuck up the US military. Multiple bases are effectively destroyed or disabled, dozens of aircraft shut down, missile interceptor stocks depleted, an entire aircraft carrier is running away shitting its pants (probably literally) and there are close to a thousand casualties. The US military took sizeable losses and achieved literally no strategic goals. This is not just being ineffective, this is both being ineffective and getting their shit fucked up because of it. A bunch of war criminal losers.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

IMO Iranian fucking us up would've entailed them sinking a carrier. Running away because of malfunctions and logistics failures is us fucking ourselves up, and is even more pathetic and embarrassing.
