Man this is my least favorite episode of "The office" ever.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

or that cringey "homeland" series.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Good job you fucking dunce...

The Pedo-in-Chief isn't qualified to run a side of the road fruit cart let alone this fucking nation. If you are a MAGAt, I really do wish you the worst. Not even joking

[–] JiveTurkey@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

I second this.

[–] stumu415@lemmy.zip 16 points 7 hours ago

Iran does not take anything the current US regime says seriously. I would not be surprised if they drag it out - which they easily can - until the next election in 2028. See if there is a change in government.

This current regime is not trustworthy and I'm not talking about the Iranians.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 57 points 9 hours ago (4 children)

Wow. Absolutely pathetic play by the USA.

I still don't think Americans realize how catastrophic this will be for their image of being a superpower to the world. This destroys USA's image of being a super power. Imagine spending all that money on a military and just walking away against a war with Iran with NOTHING. PATHETIC

[–] sychthys@lemmy.world 45 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

American here. Those of us with any sense don't care anymore about being a superpower. We know we're a fuckin joke on the world stage. We just want a working country but we know we'll likely never see that again in our lifetimes.

And yeah yeah, "then do something about it" is easily said. Getting people across thousands of miles to gather in one place with no affordable travel infrastructure is intensely difficult.

[–] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

My state is larger than most European countries and it's not even that large of a state.

When people say "then do something about it voting isn't working" they're asking 50 different countries to drop their jobs (most of them getting fired in the process and losing Healthcare) and personal lives to get mowed down by gung-ho losers who can't wait to kill anyone they think is further left than they are.

Seriously, there are several websites dedicated to illustrating the true size of countries compared to others, just fiddle around with some European countries overlaying them on the US.

My friends in the UK complain about travel time and distance to get to relatives houses on holidays when the relative is only 60 miles away. I used to drive 60 miles just to get to work.

Seriously, I'd love to be able to drop everything and go demand change or else but the reality is far more complex and bloody than that.

When people tell Americans "go do something about it and don't take no for an answer" what they are really saying is "go kill yourself via law enforcement" but are either too naive or too cowardly to say it directly.

[–] AnarchistArtificer@lemmy.world 2 points 28 minutes ago

"My friends in the UK complain about travel time and distance to get to relatives houses on holidays when the relative is only 60 miles away. I used to drive 60 miles just to get to work."

A phrase that I've heard that captures the contrast well is:

In the UK, 100 miles is a long distance; In the US, 100 years is a long time

As a Brit, I can't imagine driving 60 miles to get to work.

When I was a kid, we'd sometimes take a day trip out to the seaside, which was 63 miles away. If we wanted to do this, we'd have to get up super early so we could have enough time there.

For a longer holiday in the Summer, we would occasionally take a trip to a different place a bit further down on the coast, which was an 85 mile journey. We viewed that as being prohibitively far away for a day trip, and I don't remember ever going there if we weren't spending at least 4 days there (including the travel days).

It's insane how relative our perceptions of these things are.

[–] sychthys@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Nailed it. Very well said.

[–] Mannimarco@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

What does the size of the country have to do with anything

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

It’s harder to get people concentrated enough to stage effective protests, if a small number of people live spread out over a huge area.

That wouldn’t be such a barrier if the people as a whole really wanted to protest, but it’s still a mixed bag, and the less densely populated the area, the less likely people are to want to protest, as they tend to be more conservative or politically apathetic regions (very roughly)

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 23 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Oh I don't think anything can be done about it. It's not just the Americans fault either. The entire "free" world put their eggs in one basket so to speak. The USA has been a beacon of freedom and a place all people aspiring to be free look up too. Maybe it was all just propaganda and lies? However, even to this day Americans will defend their country thinking it's the best that there is. Maybe the first step for Americans is to stop being so damn proud?

[–] queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone 15 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Americans, I assume like many other countries in the world, get blasted with the patriotism firehose early and often. For the first two decades of my life I generally held the assumption that America was the best and most free, England was pretty good and kind of free, then maybe some of the scandinavian countries, then all the countries no one cares about, and at the bottom was Russia, North Korea, and China, in that order. It was really hard to find information to the contrary, and even if you did, voicing doubts about America's number-one-ness could seriously cost you a job, a family relationship, a scholarship, etc. if not actually get you under investigation by the authorities (depending on what was said and to whom). It simply wasn't done when I was younger, at least in my social sphere.

I think the internet really did a number on America's propaganda program, because a lot more young people nowadays, even before Trump, seem a lot more disillusioned about America and its role in the world. There's been a bit of a backslide, I think, as the powerful have consolidated their grip on the internet, but not a complete one. Kids seem to understand that they're being lied to, even if they don't understand the full scope and nature of the deception.

Maybe that a consequence of who I choose to keep in my immediate IRL circle these days. Maybe it's just hope. But I think, or hope, that we're better off than we were 40 years ago as far as understanding what our government is actually doing goes.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

social media, like tiktok, reddit, youtube videos, "XITTER" and the right wing manosphere people all helped with that.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 13 points 8 hours ago

Yes totally agree with a lot of this. I'm an immigrant to the USA from Poland, I was brought here when I was 6. Boy did I drink the USA cool aid. I started questioning things early though, when Obama was president. I was taught in the Chicago school district in the late 90s to 00s. Inclusion, diversity and free critical thinking were taught. PBS was also a staple during childhood.

Anyway when Obama was president I was shocked at how angry people were in certain areas of the country. I thought it was just another logical step in the USA history. Then I moved to Oklahoma in 2014 for a job and boy did that make me question what this country really is. The racism was common in Chicago, but in Oklahoma it was on another level. Sure the people were nice, but since I was a white male they would open up easily to me and I didn't like the things I heard.

Next Trump came on the scene and that was a bit disturbing and I was surprised by his win. That's when I started visiting Europe around 2017. As the years progressed I have become extremely disillusioned by the USA. I tried to enjoy the beautiful nature and empty spaces, but living in the cities working day to day was becoming to eat at my soul. Now I'm convinced that the cities here have been destroyed by automobiles. Any argument for more walkable and healthy cities is politicized and people are so against it. So yeah I'm hoping to move to Europe, if only it was so simple.

[–] sychthys@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Great response. Apologies for my initial defensiveness. Most of what I see here is "well then do something about it" so I was just trying to head that off.

I agree with you. And yeah, it was always propaganda from like the 1960s onward at a minimum. Nixon fucked us over and we've been going downhill since.

Any Americans still defending this playground for pedophile billionaires are idiots who refuse to look critically at this place for even a second, and are likely part of the problem. Fuck em. There's not much to be proud of here. Some small things, mostly local, but nothing on a national scale.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Were a joke*

The US is seen on par with Russia now. Above NK; below China. Kind of just go around fucking everyone and everything, unapologetically and oblivious. Most of the rest of the world is done and started the transition to cut the US out of the picture. Globalisation is slow but a hard thing to turn once a course is set. When possible, the US will start getting sanctioned.

There's still the jokes, but even that's fatigued.

[–] decolo@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago

The only thing we have on Russia at this point is gasoline is not currently being rationed.

[–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 hours ago

I’m an American unfortunately.

I just want to have healthcare and strong regulations, I don’t give a fuck about being a super power.

The world will be better off once we’re not in charge, it can’t happen soon enough.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago

The empire is actively falling, it won't matter anymore

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 3 points 8 hours ago

i don't think they're a super power anymore. they're weak. stuff like this on top of the stories about ships going unsupplied, etc, doesn't say to me "super power".

I don't think the US people honestly care, or rather are too preoccupied, to bother with how the rest of the world sees them. I think the American people are now trying to get their shit in order and based on recent voting and other news I hope they do just that.

[–] sleepmode@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Wonder which stocks he just bought. Bet his diaper fluffer is typing that up for him right now.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 hours ago

Looking forward to this. Remember the JCPOA?

[–] funkreddit@lemmy.zip 25 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Iran strait fuked up the greatest military on earth??? WOW

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 hours ago

The finest weapons are useless in the hands of morons surrounded by yes men.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 14 points 9 hours ago (5 children)

They didn't fuck it ip, it was just ineffective.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago

I’d say it’s a combination. Whiskey Pete fucked it up because he thought munitions and testosterone win wars, and once he gimped the supply lines it didn’t take much for Iran to fuck it up and then sit back and watch as the navy fell apart.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 16 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Well, we still don't really know the damage that has been done to all the bases and equipment in that region. It is quite possible that Iran did indeed fuck up the greatest military on earth. The fact that I am writing this would be unbelievable to myself 10 years ago. What an idiotic disaster this "expedition" has been

[–] shutz@lemmy.ca 15 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

The reason that that big carrier that was in the news recently was starving its personnel and all that was because most of the US's bases in the area were destroyed/damaged, so there was no way to resupply. That part was kinda kept quiet in the media, because it makes the US Military look so pathetically bad (worse than their current perception.)

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

This is somewhat of an exaggeration... the US has plenty of cargo planes that can land on a carrier and enough local airfields nearby for a quick stop to refuel ...
But this requires a thoroughly set up plan for logistics and that's where the higher ups don't see the need (nor for making a plan of action in this war in the first place, they just raced out the door shooting wildly)...

The problem lies in the complete bubble the higher ups are living in, hegseth has access to unlimited food and drink and is the exact type to waive complaints away by uttering a statement in the vein of "let them eat cake". Most of the other staff left over by now at the Pentagon are bootlickers and yes men who live in the same bubble of awesomeness, too afraid to fall out of it. Same with trump, surrounded by yes men afraid of telling him otherwise, because anyone who does will be punished, so trump is fully enveloped in the same bubble of awesome and thinks everything he says or thinks up is the best tasting shit ever...

It's kinda weird how the US is becoming a caricature, not of itself but of China where no one dares to take responsibility when things end disastrous and to save face of all involved a full on positive lie is spread to cover up the disaster. Heck the US is racing towards a Social Credit system with intense data gathering on every citizen like China has been building.

Meanwhile China is becoming a modern variant of a path the USA has been nudged away from: renewable energy based, leaders in AI and robotics and automated factories, Electric Vehicles as main mode of transportation, rapidly reducing pollution (anyone remember the pictures of smog clouds in Beijing of the 90s and 00s? Hasn't happened in a while there, but the US will get that phenomenon in the near future).

And then there is the enormous military growth, from hypermodern systems to upcoming airfighters that keep up with the USs latest offerings, who will buy expensive American weaponry that will be locked down with DRM if the Chinese build and upgrade faster?

Back on topic ... it all started with the utter disregard for the situation of the Iranian government, they would NEVER just surrender because trump said so nor because of a few bombs, if the folks in power in Iran ever dropped their weapons a very angry mob would lynch AND quarter all of them alive, so they can't just step aside, this all next to hegseth just plain underestimating the iranian abilities on home turf because he lives inside that awesomeness bubble.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 12 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I think starting a war with almost no objective doesn’t help.

Honestly it contributes to appear Trump’s only goal is weakening the US.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 3 points 7 hours ago

He is incompetent and evil. He has gotten a lot of people killed over nothing. I don't think his goal is to weaken the US (if it is, maybe he isn't incompetent after all), but simply to use his position to enrich himself and stroke his ego. The USA was supposed to be a mighty military power and home to a people that would fight to maintain their freedom. Instead, the military has shown the world how impotent it really is, and the rugged individualist citizens of this country simply bent over for him and the ultra wealthy class. Pathetic.

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

They had all the gear but no idea.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 2 points 7 hours ago

Just like the Russians. Cold war era tactics don't work anymore, it looks like.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

It was as ineffective as usual (at military goals - plenty effective at destroying civilian infrastructure and murdering schoolgirls).

But also Iran absolutely did fuck up the US military. Multiple bases are effectively destroyed or disabled, dozens of aircraft shut down, missile interceptor stocks depleted, an entire aircraft carrier is running away shitting its pants (probably literally) and there are close to a thousand casualties. The US military took sizeable losses and achieved literally no strategic goals. This is not just being ineffective, this is both being ineffective and getting their shit fucked up because of it. A bunch of war criminal losers.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

IMO Iranian fucking us up would've entailed them sinking a carrier. Running away because of malfunctions and logistics failures is us fucking ourselves up, and is even more pathetic and embarrassing.

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I'd eat my pants if Trump signed a deal with half of the things mentioned.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

which he says he will but will quickly renege on it, or do a pump and dump on the stock markets.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 9 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I would not be taking any bets, especially ones where eating pants is on the table, related to the clown in chief.

Institutionally, he is an evil pedophile oligarch, beholden to other US elites in his imperialist crusade to keep US a dominant power.

But personally he is a demented narcissistic idiot who can't help but suck it up to the last person who said nice things to him. I can see a near future where some Iranian diplomat gets half an hour in a room with trump and gets him to give away California as an Iranian territory in exchange for a trump Tower Tehran or some shit.

Then again, the list of demands given out by Iran is way too reasonable to happen in this timeline...

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 12 points 10 hours ago

And this is what we call got 'em by the balls

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 hours ago

Escalated to descalate and/or make extra concessions is fine if it means de-escalation and resolution this time. The oil price yoyo suggests its real.

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 hours ago

President Pedophile Donald J. Trump keeps throwing a tantrum every time he's reminded that the US lost the war he started without congressional approval. He then sulks, gets reminded that we're all still waiting for the Trump-Epstein files, and starts making demands anew on Iran.

This cycle seems to repeat itself.

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Looks like a copypasta from last week or last month or whatever…

Who’s to know?
