This is Aldi, I get my quarter back.
I once paid 8 fucking bucks to use a cart at an airport. They give you a quarter back for returning it. I feel like they misunderstood the meaning of "deposit" but whatever, I absolutely did not return that shit and hopefully someone else saved 8 bucks.
That's just forced incentive to take it back.
And it works. I’ve never seen an Aldi with a parking lot strewn with carts.
Sometimes I don’t even make it back to the cart area before someone comes up to me with a quarter to trade for the cart.
Kinda sounds like the people around you are a problem. In my area, most places are paid but even the free ones don't have carts just left around. They're often lazily put in the shelter thing but they're in there.
Theres plastic tokens you can use in those. In Poland, in nearby leroy merlin (it's a french(?) home improvement store) they even give them out to customers.
I guess people don't carry around change all that much here.
