Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Just noticed I was subscribed to both this place and 196@lemmy.blahaj.zone. I'd prefer if this community were on PieFed proper, so I thought maybe it's a replica of this one on PieFed... but it's not. They're both on the same server, but the numbers are actual numbers in the url instead of being spelled out. Huh?

Maybe another time I'll give a better explanation. I'm really tired and used all of my energy explaining why Shoe0nHead is a Nazi, so I'll be brief:

Rimu see Piefed as software that should only be used by certain people with certain ideologies, and institutes platform wide rules by default. One thing he won't tell you is that the toggle for these features were added after people complained, and users were given an error message rather than a notice for why they couldn't post. It wasn't as bad as the Tesseract client that shadowbanned without telling people, but mostly because he choose to take input and not to double down like that guy did. There's also the reputation score that dings you for posting memes (don't get me started)

It's also not just fascists and tankies that he has a problem with. Following anti anarchist Lemmy world drama, he escalated his own anti anarchist action and cast a wide net. After almost nobody sided with him, he took a break from public posting for a bit. He also really hates quokka for some reason, going so far as to try and fail to steal her code, despite the fact that it was voluntarily offered (I don't have a link for this rn, but ask quokka yourself if you really want to know)

Sorry I couldn't give better receipts. I should probably make a master document with all the lore one of these days.

If I remember correctly, the incident went more like this:

.

You make it sound like not attributing was a mistake, but you intentionally tried to remove it. The problem was never that you copied the code, but that you believed you didn't need to credit people you don't respect. Your pettiness is a far bigger threat to the future of Piefed than we are.

[–] rimu@piefed.social -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That doesn't show me intentionally trying to remove it. That's me surprised that the authorship of the cross-posting functionality was preserved.

The missing authoriship that I did was on the themes.

As soon as I realised that the author was unhappy about it (a week later), I removed the code from PieFed. Why is that not the end of the issue?

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You wanted to use her work and intentionally exclude attribution. That's textbook plagiarism, and also really petty.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe you're missing some context. Did you check the link in the screenshot? https://lemmy.world/post/46837717.

At the start of the convo I was talking about Mia making announcements on behalf of PieFed, which I thought was a really weird thing for her to do. Then I said that I didn't realise she could be considered to be a contributor (her contributions to PieFed up till that point had been extremely minor), which MrKaplan corrected me on.

It was a pretty chill normal interaction. This taking things out of context and selectively cropping them tactic has been used by the flotilla again and again. It's stuff like that which is why I can't work with them https://join.piefed.social/2026/08/14/open-source-runs-on-good-faith/

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you want to stick with the "everyone else is operating in bad faith except me" narrative in your own communities, go ahead. The fact is that you broke relations with Mia first, you were the one that interpreted her behavior as bad faith, and you were the one who went out of their way to remove attribution after this conversation with MrKaplan. If anyone is operating in bad faith, it's you.

Also, coming into week old threads to argue with some random blahaj.zone mod? Nobody is reading this; you honestly have better things to do. Posting evidence of Piefed's trans ally features like it can excuse any criticism of you, despite the fact that none of us got mad at you for supposed bigotry in the first place? It comes across like virtue signaling, which actually makes your allyship less trustworthy.

Sorry for triggering you with my comments, but I'm not gonna hold off on being honest about my problems with you and Piefed.

There were certainly people saying "I heard rimu is a transphobe" because of shit Mia said. They won't do that now that I've documented all the pro-trans things I've done over an extended period. If that makes Mia look bad, that's not an attack by me that's just Mia looking bad.

I guess we've reached an impasse here. Good day.

The last one us really nuts. I don't think "stupid" is a word getting upset over, but the person who brought it up was being very respectful and his response... Yikes.

The middle one sounds bad but I'll need to look into it a bit more in order to have a strong opinion. I think its irresponsible to claim all anarchists bad though, even if you generally dislike the ideology.

The first one is what I see all the time and I'm sorry I just don't get it. The guy lays out the things he doesn't want to give credence to, which seem reasonable to me, and has places that sympathize with those things, such as authoritarianism, filtered out by default. I don't think it should be hardcoded now or in the future, but its not like he's hiding it either. You linked to a page where he explains it for all to see. It doesn't come across as slight of hand. That's not to say everything is fine so long as the person doing it says they're doing it, but I wouldn't want dictator apologists in my circle either if I could help it.

Just re-read a bit and saw ppl were given generic error messages. Yeah, not cool. I'm really conflicted over all. Idk what this guy's deal is.

He really wants piefed to be his personal domain, not a FOSS project to serve the fedi community. Even if I agreed with every feature, I still think these things should be up to the instance admins, not the platform developers. Him being so hostile and petty towards anarchists wouldn't be as big of a deal if he didn't want to police behavior on more than just his instance.

I ultimately don't think he's a bigot or some horrible, irredeemable person. He is stubborn and his own worst enemy, but I really do want piefed to be the best version of itself. Beyond any problems with developers, piefed introduced needed features to this side of the fediverse, which encouraged Lemmy developers to add them to their own platform. Piefed's existence is a good thing, but that doesn't mean I want to use it. I don't want to make you hate it, just help you understand why it isn't a clear cut successor to Lemmy.

Gotcha I really appreciate the explanation and extra details. I personally stick with Piefed bc I don't want to use software run by MLs and that is indifferent to LLM usage, but I hope PieFed is either forked or that he comes to his senses in many ways.

I don't get why someone would make a FOSS project if he wanted it to only serve him, as you describe. It's straight up counter intuitive.

My guess is that it's because the rest of the fediverse (ActivityPub) is FOSS, and a closed project wouldn't get the same attention the fediverse gets. There has been early development on forks by people like Mia and db0 for personal use, but I'm not sure of the current status of such efforts. I suspect that such projects will remain obscure unless rimu goes off the deep end as hard as the Tesseract developer.
