Hate to be that person but no, this is not correct. Long live to the heroes of the Soviet Union who gave their lives defending their homeland from fascism, long live the Cuban doctors who study all their lives to treat their compatriots.
You could say the Red Army GOATs didn't die to protect the country, but their nation. The land, though important, is but irrelevant compared to the people.
Its the people. That's what everything is about. That's what everything has always been about.
I like to think every communist is motivated not by loyalty to the state (even if its the state of the workers), but to the workers themselves. The state is just a passing thing. A tiny blip in the history of humanity
You could argue it ultimately was for the people, but one of the most memorable and widely used slogans during the war was Za rodinu, za Stalina! literally meaning "For the Motherland, for Stalin!".
Of course people don't cry "for the state!" as in "for the apparatus of class repression and bureaucracy!", but when they cry "for my country!" they're not exclusively chanting "for my peoples and close ones!"
This definition is good because it makes dying for the US even worse, because there is no group of incurious unenlightened backwards "people" more unworthy of your self sacrifice.
