Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Try reading your text through a TTS screen reader, like a blind user of this community would have to do.

That a new way of speaking ? I am not English native. If I didn't had the image as reference I wouldn't be able to understand. I am curious, last time I seen something similar was when we were 1447 speaking.

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Here’s a few.

  • ŋ is contracting “-ing”
  • ð “th[e]”
  • ç “ch”
  • 🇹🇭 Thailand [flag]
  • 年 year
  • hu who
  • wld would

I can contract the post more, but I felt this was basic contractions.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

ok but do ANY of these make sense?

the only languages i know that use ç use it with an s sound, not a ch one

and how is anyone supposed to know how year is written in chinese?

oh also i think you put the wrong links cause i don't see any of the "contractions" you made in them

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

They do, if you know IPA.
“Ș & Ç” used to be “Sh & Ch” substitutes before IPA created “ʃ & ʒ” respectively. In English electronic keybords, those characters are more accessible than “ʃ & ʒ.”
The “year” one is a personal touch, I admit. I prefer a logogram over 4 symbols.

i don’t see any of the “contractions” you made in them I'm about to slay your brain🤯. Even b4 SMSlang, we had something called 🌈shorthands✨.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

so not only do i have to learn IPA, i need to learn the old symbols that aren't used anymore? if you go out of your way to put a lologram in there why not also add ʃ and ʒ to your keyboard?

ok i have to be more specific... i don't see any of the random characters you're calling "contractions" in any of those links.

edit: forgot to mention, if you're using ç for the ch sound, why is it in niche, the one word with a ch that makes an sh sound?

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I can def. add “ ʃ and ʒ” to my ⌨️, but will folks add them to their font banks?

why is it in niche, the one word with a ch that makes an sh sound? Ingliʃ ╮(︶▽︶)╭

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

if you care about people not having the font for characters, you should probably not use random chinese characters

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 2 points 1 week ago

I did admit to that fair argument.
But will Englishers accept “yr”?

[–] Starski@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just text like a normal person, the whole point of language is to be understood not be obnoxiously avant-garde.

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why do normal people invade queer spaces‽ Contractions in langs demonstrate literacy, why do you want to obnoxiously demand people “text” like you‽

[–] Starski@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Queer as in strange, or queer as in gay? As I am both. Either way, to deny outside input is to deny original thoughts, and that often denotes lack of literacy. I don't demand people text like me, I do however criticize people intentionally writing in an obtuse way, knowing that it would be more difficult for the average person to understand it. It's pretentious, and frankly feels more like you obnoxiously demanding people to learn to read your specific way of writing, instead of the other way around.

[–] alapakala@quokk.au -1 points 1 week ago

to deny outside input is to deny original thought Then let's learn more contractions and queerer thoughts!
What are your fav. contractions?
I am aware English writers hate logograms.
What are your favorite ones? I don’t […], I do however Why are But,-isming yourself? average person I’m not alt textn avg. peepz. It’s pretentious, and frankly feels more like you obnoxiously demanding people to learn to read your specific way of writing
Stop pretending to be a queer queer, and enjoy the meme!

No way I think this guy is actually being serious

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In my ability to contract English further, or being silly with 196?
Also, “not a guy,” but a concept.

Thanks, I will study it during this year XD.
