One thing that's really frustrating is that in other countries where democracy is in danger you see huge protests in the streets.

Hong Kong protests

Hungary protests

France protests

That gives the distinct impression that even if the average American doesn't support what Trump is doing, they don't really oppose it enough to bother shutting down the country.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not surprising at all. Look at how many convinced themselves to stay home the one time they couldve prevented this shitstorm.

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

And those non-voters are still patting each other's backs.

Suspiciously often with a ".ml" domain ending for whatever reason

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Our society has been designed so that taking even an hour off to vote or protest means no food on the table.

Could that with the critical mass who don't give a shit and, well, yeah, no movement.

General strike just cannot happen because of that, so violent revolution is the only next step but even that is unlikely.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

Nah, it will happen. All it takes is a spark when tensions are high enough (they aren't yet).

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Our society has been designed so that taking even an hour off to vote or protest means no food on the table.

And you think that's not the case in Hungary or Hong Kong?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

it only works if everyone is affected equally, in america people still have food, some are still paid highly enough not to do much, and people still have things like welfare, if govt strips that away there will definitely be mass unrest. republicans/dems still have those things plus a job. HK people enjoyed freedom from ccp rule for decades, but since ccp tried exert thier rule, the protests came out.

We did have huge protests in multiple cities. I'm not sure why you expect them to result in immediate change when that typically takes years to happen. Hungary was under Orban for almost 20 years and they didn't even force him out with a protest. Serbia hasn't changed. Slovakia hasn't changed. The list goes on.

It doesn't happen overnight or over a week. You're basically demanding that we overthrow the government because we didn't like the election results and it shouldn't be surprising that people aren't ready to do that. It takes a lot more than what Trump's done to get people to that point.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We did have huge protests in multiple cities

Once? Many months ago?

That's why I specifically talked about shutting things down.

You're basically demanding that we overthrow the government because we didn't like the election results

No, I'm demanding that you prove that democracy matters to you by shutting things down until you get your democracy back.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

There were hundreds of protests this year and just year, it wasn't once. If you're just going to lie about reality then I'm not going to engage with you, because I guarantee you wouldn't apply this same ridiculous standard to your own country. Especially considering Canada was ready to elect their own racist fascists until Trump ran his mouth.

Get our democracy back? My state just had an election and we have full Dem control of our government. States run our elections, not Trump. But you're telling me it's gone? The doomer shit is just delusional.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There were hundreds of protests this year

Yes, the US is a big, spread-out country.

How many protests were there in DC? Did any of them succeed in shutting the city down -- you know, the way that other protests in other capital cities were shut down when their democracy was threatened?

Canada was ready to elect their own racist fascists

Explain to me how Pierre Poilievre is, in any way, comparable to Trump.

My state just had an election and we have full Dem control of our government

Great, and I assume the federal government has no impact on your day-to-day life?

[–] Squirrelanna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

I'd wager that most folks in the US can't afford the plane ticket or multiple day trip it'd take to go to DC for a protest.

How many protests were there in DC? Did any of them succeed in shutting the city down

Oh, the capital already shut down by occupying federal troops for a year? ...Yeah they did (and are) protesting and resisting

Explain to me how Pierre Poilievre is, in any way, comparable to Trump.

Ah so now "not Trump" is an acceptable standard, thus the Overton window shifts

Great, and I assume the federal government has no impact on your day-to-day life?

Not sure what point you're trying to make here. Yes, obviously funding and aid cuts hurt everyone. Yes core federal institutions are being dismantled and looted. But despite what you might think, most Americans have very little tangible interaction with federal resources. Say your social security check stops coming in the mail or your Medicare coverage is cut. Who can you go to protest?

Beyond Washington D.C. + military bases + hubs in major cities, offices and personnel are sparse and scattered. For my (relatively populated) area, the nearest federal government property is either a local post office or 1+ hour drive to some small field offices in the city. For me to get anywhere near any prominent elected federal official or department head would be missing multiple days of work and hundreds of dollars in transportation. It turns out it's hard to organize sustained protests in those conditions when over 50% of the population lives paycheck to paycheck.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

Oh, the capital already shut down by occupying federal troops for a year? ...Yeah they did (and are) protesting and resisting

Did you miss the question "How many?" I'm not saying there have never been any protests. I'm saying that compared to countries that Canadians respect, the number of protests in the US shows that Trump's destruction of democracy isn't a big deal to Americans.

Ah so now "not Trump" is an acceptable standard, thus the Overton window shifts

Did you realize you're replying to a post called "The verdict is in: Canadians hate America thanks to Trump"?

Not sure what point you're trying to make here.

Lies.

Which is why we hate the entire US, not just tRump.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

Spotted this in the Hong Kong one 😄

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

8 million Americans protested at over 3,300 No Kings events nationwide on Saturday March 28, the largest single-day protest in American history. Source

I know the only goal here is to shit on the US but there are plenty of ways to do that on legitimate points without making up absolute bullshit, so please eat a nice fat American dick with this nonsense.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

One protest, 4 months ago.

Yeah, that's definitely going to defeat fascism.

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh we’re up from zero to one, I see. The largest in American history, and no it has not been the only one. Your response is pathetic. Doubling down where you have been shown to be wrong. You should be ashamed of yourself.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 month ago

Wow, you're so emotional. One protest on one day. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong their protests were an ongoing thing for more than a year until they were interrupted by the COVID pandemic. The German anti-AFD protests started in January 2024 and are still ongoing, more than 2.5 years later.

You haven't "shown me to be wrong", you've misinterpreted what I said and then got all butthurt. The rest of the world doesn't respect the US because the US protests were one and done, and didn't actually change anything.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

propaganda also have convinced protestors as a nuisance to thier daily commute, and "disruptive" plus its villinized as lazy, jobless people on both sides. The MSMs also dont report much on it at all to give it more attention, since the news is mostly owned by republicans. thats why there isnt cohesion. unless both rs and ds, lost thier jobs as a result of trump there wont be any protests.

John Galbraith's book Culture of Contentment will help explain why

https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691171654/the-culture-of-contentment

It's not until people are very desperate; Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India and even then we have Animal Farm as a cautionary tale

look at Ukraine, student protestors were being shot and killed in the Maiden uprising, Belarus similarly albeit theirs failed.
