And I don't mean just Google's Android. Every single iteration. With their stupid memory management for PoWeR sAvInG.

I was typing up a rant on how incredibly boring and stupid Disclosure Day was when I just quickly switched to Firefox to look up a character's name when Android decided that I was done using my Lemmy client and just outright killed it without even giving it enough time to save my comment to drafts, like it usually does.

You can never be sure when you leave an app whether it will continue doing what it's supposed to or if it will be frozen or killed.

I've got 4 GB of RAM and multiple CPU cores. That should be enough to run a dozen apps in parallel. My frickin N900 with 128 MB had better multitasking than a modern Android smartphone!

I disable power management on the apps I use often and never run into the issue.

Power management does nothing when RAM is as constrained as 4GB

[–] vantablack@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

can confirm. my last phone had only 4gb of RAM and was like this regardless of any settings i changed and it was INFURIATING

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

the question is: why do two, not even three, apps consume all of the 4gb?

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The operating system has to use that RAM too.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yes i know that obviously. But what do modern oses do more than they did with the memory limitations back then? They serve you more ads and they convince that taking up literally half of your memory and not even leaving enough resources for two apps is somehow necessary, when older computers hosted the os and the apps comfortably in a tiny fraction of that.

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

No, they do a lot more behind the scenes, running far more useful and necessary services.

Older computers couldn’t do as much as modern computers either.

Also the thing that almost no one send to have mentioned is that computers are multitaskers. People using a computer use multiple programs all at once while they’re all in focus. On phones that’s not the case unless you’re using a foldable or split screen, in which case it keeps those apps alive indefinitely without refreshing/closing. A phone is otherwise one app at a time, and any app that you haven’t used for a few minutes will get suspended so it doesn’t go back to the old days of Android’s battery life being absolutely atrocious due to apps running “full speed” in the background.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

read the op's complaint. And all those extra services shouldn't need gb of ram anyway.

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

”shouldn’t need fb of ram anyway”

Says who? Based on what?

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

the fact that systems exist which don't, but still do the same things

my pc at home, which doubles as a server, which runs plex, qbittorrent and other stuff, idles at about 1.5 to 2 gigs. While signed in to kde

The phone i am typing this on is currently sitting at just under 5gigs in use, jerboa is the only open app.

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Does your pc have a mobile connection? Does your phone have all the services a phone does? No, so it’s not a fair comparison.

RAM being “in use” doesn’t mean that it requires it at that exact time. Unused RAM is wasted ram. Phones pre-load commonly used apps into ram without “opening” them. Your home server doesn’t.

If my phone had 64GB of RAM I’d want 60GB+ of that to be in use at all times, otherwise what’s the point of having it?

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

my pc also has a full networking stack, just like the phone. And it has a bunch of services running. And i didn't count cached memory for either, just what is in use at the moment.

If you had 64gigs of ram you'd want 60+ to be used as cache, not to be "in use". And i force closed all apps except the one I'm using to write this comment.

Why is it so hard for you to believe stuff is bloated and can actually be significantly more efficient?

My phone doesn't have all the services my pc has either...

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You’ve got cell reception in your pc/server?

No, it can be in use, not cached. Keep actual apps open and running in the background if you want them to. Do more in the background.

Stuff could be more efficient, but you’re talking like you know how much ram operating systems of all different types need/should be using better than the people making them. You don’t.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

in my laptop, not my pc, but yes. And it doesn't make a difference. It needs a couple of megabytes of ram. Not gigabytes. A cellular modem does its thing in its own firmware, the driver side is tiny in comparison.

When you work in embedded stuff with kilobytes of ram, you learn to appreciate just how much a little memory could go. Yes, I do know, this shit is my bread and butter

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You have no idea what Android or iOS or Windows or any other operating system is doing in the background though, you just think it’s “bloat” and “inefficient”. I guarantee you that the people making these OS’s know more about it than you, and are making it as efficient as it can be.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

well actually, yes we do know, by actually checking. You cannot guarantee anything.

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How are you checking what closed source systems are doing?

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What do you think they're doing that requires gigabytes of ram?

Thinking having a cellular connection is significantly any more memory intensive than a wifi or ethernet connection tells me that it's you who doesn't have the faintest idea of anything. You're projecting

[–] GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They’re using it for who knows how many dozens of things - simply a look at task manager on windows. They’re preloading heavens knows what to make the users experience better.

You’re talking about closed source operating systems and how they shouldn’t be using the ram that is available to them, and you think that I don’t have the faintest idea? 🤣

RAM is there to be used. You’re never using too much ram until you need to use more ram than you have. I’d have no issue with my windows using 60GB of RAM while “idling” if it makes the experience better, which it could.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

you're talking about caching, which is not counted and does not count as in use. Closed source != magic. They don't do anything open source stuff can't (I still can't believe you thought a cellular connection was magic)

[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

the question is: why do two, not even three, apps consume all of the 4gb?

Mozilla had to fire a big part of their browser engineering team to raise the salary of their CEO. That's how FF is less optimized.
