Rules:

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Another unpopular opinion, in reply some of the sentiment in the comments: You don't have to be a heavy polluter to be conscious of your impact on the planet. The biggest polluters care the least anyway. Laws can make a difference there but also normalizing eco-consciousness and marginalizing those that aren't.
the biggest polluters are the wealthy, and you can't really marginalize them, when everyone wants to be them.
the poor have the least ecological footprint. everyone being locked indoors for covid was amazing for the environment.
but nobody wants to be poor and live like they did during covid, they HATE that. They are desperate to do the opposite.
Yeah, a lot of the arguments against personal responsibility boil down to:
It's like saying "Well me smoking meth and beating my wife isn't the problem, the problem is the dealer who sells me the meth"
This is something I see so much. People like giving evocative similes without a single thought toward parity. We don't live in a world where the worst climate abuses are economy class fliers going on a four flights per year, and we could solve the whole thing if people just...didn't.
A more comparable simile is if all of what you said were true...and the pair of these hypothumans were chattel slaves under a mean master in the Deep South. Yes, the meth-taking physical abuser should stop, but there are worse abuses happening every day, on a larger scale, by a rich white man who owns them both.
Whataboutism
I could say the exact same thing to you, removing any context about the supermajority of polluters to say "what about how every individual is doing their part to pollute too!"
And we'll both just be sat here, I guess.
You could, but that would be intellectually dishonest, because you came and replied to Me while I was talking about the actions of the common people. I'm not doing anything to deny the role of the rich in all this, but you're coming to a conversation about the role of the poor and saying "what about this other thing".
If Franz and Albert are talking about the hockey and I butt in to talk about tennis, there's nothing wrong with them continuing to talk about hockey. Tennis is the intruder, that's quite obvious.
You're the one saying that one thing is good because the other is bad. I think they're both bad. I'm not using any badness as an excuse.
