Fall from Heaven 2 is amazing and there's nothing like it. There's games that are similar (such as Endless Legend), but FFH2 felt so unique. I often think about reinstalling Civ 4 just to play it.
Have you tried Ashes of Erebus yet?
Haven't heard of it but I'll go take a look.
It's basically the successor to FFH2, it's expanded a lot and still gets updates, though it's still pretty rough around the edges imo. the barbarians are way too fucking strong
