Eh, we are currently experiencing what is called "steam engine time". Tons of people are working on this AI tech at the same time and are sometimes inventing the same tech nearly simultaneously, the same as with steam engines hundreds of years ago. All of the conditions were there: Decades of previous research, new breakthroughs, fast enough hardware and enough capital to fund it all.

Sam Altman is a crook, but if it wasn't for him, someone else would have done a similar thing in his place.
