996 is illegal, and was restricted mostly to large tech companies. Modern working hours in China are around 44-48 per week.
Its illegal, but not if they give the workers some extra money.
Again, the practice has been cracked down on, and was largely in bleeding edge tech companies. It isn't the backbone of the Chinese economy, nor is it the norm.
EDIT: I have been proven wrong and what i have said is false. Thanks to cowbee. My experience is outdated.
EDIT 2: Oops the original comment went no where it's just the edit now
I agree that it's ridiculous to use social media comments as evidence. Chinese workers work on average 46 hours a week. This is a fact, and the median is lower as the sectors 996 was found in before the crackdown raised the average, largely in Beijing and Shanghai, and largely in the tech sector.
Which?
Unsure where it's listed, but you can find stats online.
