AOC was a genuinely transformative candidate for about six months in 2019, right after she got elected but before Nancy Pelosi put her in a headlock and nuggied her into submission. Now she's just a cardboard cutout of democratic socialism that the neoliberal base of the party can drag out to fundraise with.
America elected an African American Man, because he had a 1000 watt smile and knew how to talk pretty on TV.
I think AOC still needs work on her stage presence. But with some coaching and practice, a bit more time dealing with the national news vultures, and a base that's hungry enough to buy what she's selling, she could be a front-runner for anything she wants to run for.
If she makes it to a general election, indie voters are absolutely going to trip over their own dicks turning out for President Cute Feet. But I suspect she'll be sandbagged in the primary by some mummy brigade from Iowa accidentally unplugging all the voting booths from the district with voters under the age of 40. Then she places a tight second behind Pete Buttigieg and the super-delegates tell her they'll make her the VP candidate if she can raise an extra $150M.
This 1000 times. People need to stop listening to Democratic consultants who regularly lose elections for the wisdom of who Americans 'will' or 'will not' vote for.
The biggest issue AOC has and its a liability she hasn't overcome, and which has actually gotten worse in her tenure, is her political instincts. And I think your point about the hug of death she got from Pelosi speaks volumes. Pelosi took her aside from the rest of the class and basically told her she needed to play ball. And since then AOC has been late-to-the party wayyyy too often. She is regularly getting outlflanked and outplayed on issues she truly, truly should never be vulnerable on.
Two huge red-flags for me: When she got her ankles broken on the court by MTG on weapons to Israel, and her more recent failure to endorse the chief of staff who ran the campaign that got her into office. Not to mention her perpetual machiavelian calculating she does. Its wayyyyyy too similar to Pelosi, and I'm losing faith in her.
It really is mind-blowing. If you asked a DC consultant whether Donald Trump could win the Presidency in 2016 - much less 2024 - I gotta wonder what they'd tell you. Hillary Clinton thought her biggest competition was going to come from Jeb Bush. They didn't even see Ted Cruz coming, nevermind Donald Trump.
She's got Beltway Disease. It comes for a lot of inexperienced and naive outsider candidates.
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington isn't fictional because it presupposes a Joe Everyman disgusted with the sausage making of politics. It's fictional because it presumes Mr. Smith wouldn't be easily seduced and incorporated into the sausage-making process.
So you're saying she's better than most Washington Democrats? I think you said that but tried to frame it dismissively, lol.
She's fundraising for them.
