Not at work but I briefly lived with that guy. I just started agreeing with him on everything. "And we all know what the correct opinion on net neutrality is" "Yes we do."

"People just don't understand what Trump is doing" "Yeah, you're so right"

There's really nowhere to go when you just vaguely agree with what they're saying but don't commit to anything

Yes. Unfortunately, propaganda, intimidation and many lies and illegal actions from authoritarian regimes do work. The ones in power also don't need to care if they're still being supported by the population or not. As long as there's no revolt or upcoming election which actually gets rid of the regime and its background helpers, people are simply letting it happen right before their eyes. And so it will happen. And it will get even worse.
