I kind of feel where you’re coming from. As a kid, I loved the original 3 movies. Saw them all in the theater on their first runs. Dad bought the laserdiscs, I bought the VHS releases…

As I got older, the third movie really fell out of favor fast. Watching it now, I can see the genesis of the prequels pandering to the younger audience. Oddly enough, the first movie is a little bit corny, too. I still enjoy it, and fire up the most recent 4K77 release every now and then. Nowadays, Empire is head and shoulders above any of the other movies for me. I’ve yet to get bored watching it. It continues to make me feel what the original made younger me feel.

ETA: all of this is to say out of 9 movies (10 w/ R1), 1 has “held up” for me. 1 is still enjoyable, but i don’t think of it as “great” anymore. So yeah, I kind of see SW as a bit overblown. I’ve already told my friends not to bother calling when the next movie comes out. I’ve been fooled too many times.
