Cute Russian comic. The home of the official English version is here if anyone wants to skip ahead (or support them): https://boosty.to/gabiconomics-en

A food artel (pronounced artěl) is a voluntary association of individuals who unite to carry out joint economic activity related to the production, processing, or distribution of food products. Members typically contribute their labor and share responsibility and profits from the collective work.

It is useful to distinguish this from a cooperative. A cooperative is an association of members who pool resources for purchasing, production, or services. An artel, by contrast, traditionally refers to a group of people who personally work together in a shared enterprise and share the results of their labor. Because English has no exact equivalent for this historical form, the Russian term artel is often kept in translation or loosely described as a labor cooperative. For example, a consumer cooperative might buy food in bulk for its members, while a food artel could run its own bakery staffed by the members themselves.

Maybe we need more finance chart comics after all - I’m a bit confused about how they saved up enough to open a bakery.

They're already making food at the property for the food-cooperative that feeds all the families of the workers at the business. This is just taking that and putting a full-time chef onto the equipment they were already using for it.

They were also using their saws as tables, and it didn’t seem like they had an oven. Maybe I’m just not picturing where that window is in their shop properly, but I guess I misinterpreted it as an entirely different building.

I think the window is probably a knock out of their wall, at the front of the business, with tables in the street/sidewalk, that or it's a knock out into a back yard area.

tables in the street/sidewalk

They already got bit once for advertising in the public square, I wonder how the bureaucrats feel about taxing their table setup.

They've now built more advanced tool tables and a forge. Kitchen shouldn't be too difficult.
