"a high-profile rival of the administration" for sure is a mouthful to avoid saying a former fascist head of state convicted because of an attempted coup, if I am not mistaken.

I do think that they are fully aware many people only read headlines, or do not read past the first paragraph - which is why I think the phrasing is important and it is fucking dangerous how many media outlets misphrase headlines to normalize fascism :(
