Then again I've always loved cheesey old movies
i think i first saw it on the scifi channel in 1998 or so. around the same time i saw dune (the funny one).

Is that fucking Patrick Stuart firing a gun while clutching a pug? I am so in.
It's a great film, gorgeous set design, and it doesn't shy away from letting the weird spacefuture stuff be weird. You can feel where it deserved to be a trilogy - or maybe just have a ten hour runtime.
We need to see it on the hextube sometime, it is a wild and amazing ride. The battle pug is just the tip of the iceberg. David Lynch also gave himself a small cameo role in one scene.
Fun fact, Lynch's bad experiences with executive meddling led to him turning down another potential directing project: Return of the Jedi. Lynch was Lucas' first choice for director, and Lynch said no after one meeting with Lucas.
