After 6 interviews at a company the recruiter told me "You just aren't senior enough". It's funny, the final interview was with an individual who only has a job because I turned down his role years ago for a better job.
I've seen weird wording for rejections in the last 2 years, but the protection of "Sr" and "Principal" seems like the biggest one. Most likely to keep wages low. For this particular interview I had more experience than most of the panel individuals. Fortunately I work at the top company in my field now.
I have friends who are not even Sr, or just barely a non-jr unable to get a job. I'm not too sure what companies want.
