Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

If Trump were smart and planned ahead - just a couple weeks or so into his presidency - he would have started a highly classified project to weaponized bird flu. If they got it to work...

  1. When it's useful for Trump - they release weaponized bird flu in population centers to create a horrific pandemic. Maybe in more GOP cities than dem cities. Why? See #2.

  2. He blames "enemies trying to destroy America". Maybe he blames immigrants or democrats or immigrants-and-democrats. he could even squeeze Iran in there. He can claim anything. It doesn't matter.

  3. Trump forces the federal government to look for the enemies and he doesn't even giving lip service to trying to stop the pandemic.

  4. Panic goes off the scale as mountain of corpses form and the economy craters because other countries treat the US like a plague state. They stop travel to and from the US, etc.

  5. He demands immediate and extraordinary powers. Not just stuff like martial law but suspension of the constitution "temporarily" to stop the enemies. Of course the dems don't put up a fight and GOP SCOTUS give him what he wants.

  6. He then is effectively a dictator because his "temporary" powers are permanent.

The problem with all this is he knows from COVID he can catch this too and he's quite afraid of dying. So unless he had his "brilliant men" come up with a vaccine that the virus can't evolve immunity to or evade through evolutionary changes in the population he wouldn't want this. He's also racist enough that he wouldn't want to kill all the good white Americans while not touching foreigners who are "ripping us off".

I'm convinced if you offered him a magic wand with one wish and the choices were he becomes a hit and beloved broadway producer with a successful play and is back in New York and beloved with all his old friends and even his enemies admitting he's done a great job or he becomes dictator that he'd probably take the broadway success route.

broadway

He's one weird fucked up dude. In our reality he vile and runs a government with gestapo funded at insane levels plus he's going to spend ~$40 billion on his concentration camps. But I agree with you. He'd give all of that up to be tops on Broadway.

Covid

I disagree with you there. I don't think Trump lost a minute - even a second - of sleep on the death toll under his watch. And what he learned from that experience is that the death toll didn't matter at all. Nobody of importance cares. And when he got covid - I think he believed nonsense like his "good genes" saved him.

I don't know if you saw it - but he made a reality tv-like PR return to the White House. His helicopter landed out on the grass and he walked to the building. Even under his suit (and coat?) you could see his chest heaving and it was clear he was struggling for breath. I'm certain the doctors told him to be very careful about his health but he didn't care. He needed his big return. He was clearly still recovering and I actually thought he might have a health episode right then and there.

He wanted to wear a Superman t-shirt after he left the hospital. I don't think his near death experience taught him a thing. In fact - I think it's the opposite. He started to think of himself as invincible like Superman.
