How does this compare to other types of cognitive work? There are much more interesting things I'd rather spend my time on. It'd be nice to know if they have similar benefits.

The article specifically mentions speed training as the activity that actually produced measurable results while memory training or reasoning training did not. The theory is that this type of activity engages different brain structures.

The other potential explanation is that it's because the speed task increases in difficulty as you get better at it. I'm hoping that's the real reason.

I'm sure there will be more follow up research. In the meantime, seems like fast paced games are likely a good activity to engage in.

Same. Any word on whether something like programming has a similar effect?
