IIRC, pajamas were popularized during WWII because of air raids and having to possibly get up and go to a building bomb shelter in there middle of the night. Also works for earthquake prone areas and homes with ghosts.

You’re thinking of siren suits. Pajamas were already long in use, but were seen as indoors-only clothing.
