This is like when Biden said "Trump was the first racist President".
Yeah, I'm sure in his heart Hayes was really just trying to do the right thing, and Nixon and Reagan and the rest of them. Look, if you're racist, then doing incredible violence to people of color is just trying to do the right thing. The real problem with Trump is that he's not a sincere and moralizing racist, he's just a flippant racist.
