IIRC their thing is that you can burn/char snow with a lighter which must mean it's fake snow! Being generous and assuming it's not fake, I would say this is due to pollutants, but what do I know.
it's due to the incomplete combustion of the fuel from the lighters lmao like I could literally (and have done this) take an ice cube from my freezer and blacken it with a bic
this is also why the blowtorch doesn't blacken it, more complete combustion = no sooty build up
