Not really a controversy, apparently they were planning on completely shadow dropping the game today without any prior marketing but Geoff Keighley supposedly persuaded them to let him showcase it at the game awards as the final trailer.
Whether money changed hands for the ill advised trailer or Geoff really believed in the project and did it for free (or some combination thereof) is up for debate.
Geoff admitted it's the latter. The team did originally planned to shadowdrop and had to quickly come up with a trailer for that (which kinds of confirmed it never had the original release date during TGA some people theorized before).
