The pokemon species dies and becomes a ghost species. I don't think each individual ghost type pokemon lives then dies.

The Lavender town Marowak in the first game is one of the few actual "it was alive before and now its a ghost" situation.

Funnily enough, a recent pokemon card of the day post featured Drifloon, which has flavor text describing Drifloons and being made up of the spirits of both pokemon AND humans: "A Pokemon formed by the spirits of people and Pokemon. It loves damp, humid seasons."
