In principle platforms should verify government entities, given sufficent documentation

I mean, you can't really have accounts, pretending to be the president of the US, making joke tweets, and having people believe them. In that sense, verification is reasonable.

But yeah, Bluesky shouldn't be letting these freaks anywhere near their platform

If the platforms are (or pretend to be) politically neutral, then that's what they should do - just make sure the accounts that are being created are what they're being purported to be.

As I said, that's bare minimum. Next comes a lot of risk mitigation. Some common sense risk mitigation.
