I think the idea is if the next president doesn't play ball, he will be taken out too.
That also seems to have been Trumps entire plan for Venezuela.

It's a stupid plan, but I don't think the Iranian regime is much smarter than the Trump administration.

Venezuela was an agreement with their military, to be the de facto rulers. There is a plan, filled in their names on the cold war coup template.

The military of venezuela, the generals are in charge, not their vice president is my point.

And the vp decrying the us is hardly refusing to play ball. What else are they going to say? They will sign over concessions under the watch of the military, there will be resistance, the military will help crush it, and operated paramilitaries for what they don't want to do directly, like run through villages in areas where they've had attacks on oil infrastructure and run death squads on them, funded with cia backed illegal drug and gun sales.

This is not just random speculation, it's informed by what we spent the entire cold war doing. They filled in the blanks on the template.
