Great time to start looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?

[–] testman@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Matrix seems like the one with most potential to develop into a 1:1 Discord alternative.
Then you have XMPP, Mattermost, RocketChat, whatever Revolt.chat renamed itself into, etc.

That is a spectacularly bad name, lol

What revolt changed its name to

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

Had to google it.
Dafuq is that xD

CalcKey? FireFish? Developers of Discord alternatives are just a special kind of person. Their efforts are commendable of course.

Matrix is stunningly unintuitive to use, sadly.

Matrix is a protocol with multiple options for front-end clients. If you don't like Element, for example, you can try Cinny. They both use Matrix but are different apps.

Depends what you use it for. I see people use it for group chats, video calls, and forums, all of which would have different replacements.

Can you share your screen on irc?

[–] jtzl@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's way too fancy for irc, but good idea! I will think about how to do that. Would a single still pic be useful?

[–] CybranM@feddit.nu 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It's common to stream gameplay to friends during a voice call. Sharing a single image doesn't really compare

[–] jtzl@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

OK I dug into this. It appears this is most easily accomplished with Matrix, as it allows many-to-many audio chats. I asked for a quote. ;P

I was afraid you'd say something like that.

Dang -- I have no idea how to address that....🤔

Alright, well I'll keep thinking.

Thank you very much for the feedback.
