Downvotes are for when i believe the argument is in bad faith to begin with, or feel the other will be unreceptive to criticism, and i have better things to do than internet argument.
I hide comment scores with ublock origin. They just prevent real discussion. I also default sort by new, though I wish there were a random.
That's not the point of downvotes. If you're assuming people are downvoting you just to make you feel bad, you're taking it way to personally.
