I use it often enough and feel like it's a not all that uncommon of a word. It's the context this buffoon is using it in that is weird and out of place. No one uses it like that. It's just uncommon enough that it makes his poorly placed use of it here reek of "teen with a thesaurus trying to sound smart" energy.

No one uses it like that.

I remember it being used like that by WASPy boomers clutching pearls. Like it's the way some HOA-type ghoul or evangelical lich would use it while sputtering indignantly about the kids these days.

Only time I have ever used it IRL is quoting that banger passage from the first pages of state and revolution about blunting the revolutionary theory of its edge and vulgarizing it.

I use it pretty frequently, but in the actual "lacking sophistication" definition ie "A vulgar explanation of the rules" or "a vulgar understanding of the thing"
