Went to Turkey and negotiated a $5000 rug to $450, didn't even try to, I just heard the price and was like "nah im good" and started walking out the store and he kept lowering the price as I was walking out.

Your flight to Turkey + accommodations would probably be cheaper than buying a rug in the west lol.

Would you be willing to post a picture of your rug?

I think that's bad OPSEC since rugs are pretty unique, but it looks very very similar to this one

Fits in my entire living room, it was a pain but I managed to fit it all in my luggage with a lot of folding, no need to ship it home which was nice.

The seller did the whole charade of throwing a bunch of rugs out on the floor, seeing what colors I liked, then narrowing down to a style I liked best. Also brought a lighter to the fibers to show they weren't made of plastic which was cool lol.

It did smell a lot like mildew when I got home, I think it was stored in a humid basement for years at that point. I let it sit outside for about a week and the smell was 90% gone.

Good luck! And don't break the bank!

Good to hear. I've been trying to pitch to my wife that it's worthwhile for me to go to Uzbekistan, which I want to do anyways, and buy a rug while I'm there.

yeah carpet prices are somewhat arbitrary as they are priced like an art piece by the dealers. westerners are definitely getting fleeced though for reference a cheap 12 meter handwoven carpet in iran costs in the 350~400$ range (probably i haven't looked into carpet prices lately, this price is like for the cheapest option though). no one buys that for their home though, you can get machine woven carpets for like 50~100$ and it looks fine.
