i think its somewhat regional in addition to other, personal/cultural stuff.

i grew up and lived in southern states primarily and spent some time in the desert southwest. i also worked alongside a lot of latin americans and got schooled that way. hot days + hot food, yum yum. cajun food, nashville hot chicken, all day long.

i still didn't consider myself to be someone who was into spicy food "more than average" until i moved up north, where a lot of people are a bit more precious about their food having some spark to it. not everyone, mind you, but a lot. i see more warning signs at thai/mexican/indian restaurants here, etc. i also bumped up my ordering levels here, if they ask how spicy.

it does seem a bit generational too, like younger people here are more into spicy foods and hot sauces than the olds like me.
