Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I mean, a disproportionate amount of the vegans I've seen talk and act like her. I don't mind as long as they mind their own business and let me have my cheese lol

[–] happyfullfridge@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

irl or online? haven't met anyone fitting that stereotype irl personally

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Big "I don't care if they are gay as long as they leave me alone" energy.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No? I don't care if people are vegan, or if they eat vegan in front of me (obviously). I don't care if they tell me that they're vegan. I only care if they start screaming at me about the "animal Holocaust". Doesn't happen much, but it does.

Try to see it from the vegans pov. Vegans have this conviction that it is wrong to torture and kill animals for pleasure and you tell them "yeah but cheese lol".

Of course they would like you to think about the consequences of your actions.

Sounds about the same as Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. I'd still prefer for them to leave me alone. Morality is subjective. I don't personally think that I'm causing as much destruction as some people think I am. I think that the meat industries could definitely be more humane, but that's not my problem right now. I am pretty willing to give up beef products though.

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait, so I take it you are not of the Mormon or JW faith, yeah? Does that mean that you don't believe that animals feel pain and suffering? Otherwise I don't really see what religion and faith have to do with this.

Morality is subjective.

Of course it is! Do you believe causing pain and suffering for pleasure and without consent can be morally?

I don’t personally think that I’m causing as much destruction as some people think I am.

Again, I agree. Billionaires are by far worse for our planet and it's inhabitants. At the same time, I don't want to cause others pain just because I am not responsible for droughts because my stupid AI farms used up all the water lol

I think that the meat industries could definitely be more humane

Well, what way would you like to be killed humanely, if there is no reason for it, other than pleasure?

Raised Mormon, know quite a bit about both. Both go door to door harassing people to join and renounce their unholy lives. Not exactly the same, but still rather annoying. We're animals. Is it immoral for a bear, an omnivorous animal, to kill and eat salmon? Is it wrong to kill mosquitoes or house flies because of them mildly annoying us? I care about two things in this situation. Keeping our species alive and healthy, and keeping the planet from being destroyed. Looks like the second thing isn't happening, so it's all fucked, but that's rather irrelevant. As long as animals aren't in pain and having decent enough lives, up until the moment of their death, I don't feel bad about it. To answer your last question, shot to the head. I'll do it myself.

We’re animals. Is it immoral for a bear, an omnivorous animal, to kill and eat salmon?

No, clearly the bear doesn't know better. Do you think its immoral for a bear to have sex without consent? Of course not, and yet (I hope) you wouldn't say the same thing about humans.

Keeping our species alive and healthy, and keeping the planet from being destroyed.

A species is not really something that can be healthy and for members of our species veganism seems to be fine, according to countless studies and, well, millions of vegans that are living healthy lives.

As long as animals aren’t in pain and having decent enough lives

But how would you know that the animal parts/products that you buy are from animals that aren't weren't in pain?

To answer your last question, shot to the head. I’ll do it myself.

Nah you wouldn't get to do it yourself. Someone just decides that it would be fun to do. Is that humane? What if it's done to someone from your family? Still humane?

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fair enough to the first two points I suppose. I just hope it doesn't happen, I suppose. Probably the same as you hoping your clothing wasn't made with slave labor. Oh, I don't care who does it. I just meant that I'd save them the trouble. If I didn't know I was getting shot until the last second, I'd never have time to care. If I never realized where my family member went, I'm sure I'd be confused and worried, but I don't know how exactly I'd feel about it, as that hasn't happened to me. Depending on the person, I might assume that they just left and cut all contact. I might be quite worried, so you make a valid point. I don't know if there's any research on the topic.

Thank you as well.

Possibly because you can't tell whether random normal people on the street or online are vegan.
