The incident unfolded Saturday in Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood, where residents say federal agents disrupted a children’s Halloween parade

Shocking video shows a chaotic scene on a quiet Chicago street as Border Patrol agents in tactical gear drag a 67-year-old man from his car while children in Halloween costumes look on in horror.

According to his running club, the man, who is a U.S. citizen, was returning from a team run when agents pulled him out of his vehicle, tackled him to the ground and kneeled on top of him, allegedly breaking six ribs and causing internal bleeding.

The incident unfolded Saturday in the city’s Old Irving Park neighborhood, where residents say the agents disrupted a children’s Halloween parade amid an immigration enforcement operation.

For those who only know about Chicago from the news:

Old Irving Park is a nice, mostly residential historic neighborhood on the northwest side. It's not the nicest or fanciest (those are more toward the lake) but it's definitely on the upper end. It's a neighborhood someone in a high rise might move to when you have a family.

Bonus fact: Chicagoans mostly stick to normal pizza. Deep dish is for tourists.

Deep dish is delicious, but it's also expensive. One of the great things about pizza is that it's supposed to be cheap.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

It's expensive, hard to eat, and heavy. Thin crust keeps the party going, deep dish makes you sleepy.

Real "Chicago pizza" is tavern-style thin crust, yum.

yeah but one slice puts you away. One stuffed pizza would feed my wife and I for days so the expense was not bad. Ugh so annoyed perrys closed down.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yep, we got one once, and it lasted about a week. Delicious, but we got pretty sick of it after a couple of days.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

my wife and I (this is very much majority I) could finish it off in half a week. I was sick of it like thanksgiving. Did not want to necessarily get another real soon but liked it to the last bite. I will say if they have multiple sizes you generally want to have the smallest one.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 5 months ago

Thanksgiving is a good analogy. Too much of a good thing.

speak for yourself. deep dish is awesome. but yeah I would live in old irving in heartbeat and a friend of mine used to live in the area.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I like deep dish, based on your other reply in this chain I think we're on the same page! I guess I was a little hyperbolic there to say it's "for tourists"

I meant Chicagoans aren't consuming it the way New York style pizza is consumed in New York...which is apparently a popular misconception about Chicago. We default to thin crust like normal people lol

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

oh yeah. could not eat it every night but oh boy ordering it is a special occasion. This place perrys that closed down near us had a great one and at times we got it almost once a month but yeah im thinking even at the height maybe 6 times a year and have not had it for years. Part of that though is I just have not found a new one I love. well that and we currently have to pinch every penny and are not eating out at all.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think deep dish is really only "good" when it's straight out of the oven and it's been years since I've ordered pizza that wasn't delivered

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I actually found it held up in the fridge well and heated up well as long as you take into account its dense nature. It actually did not surprise me given its practically a block of cheese.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Ah really? I've never gotten it to be hot all the way through without burning the crust. Then again, it's even more rare that I have any left over since I'm not ordering it lol

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Wrap it in foil. Or at least foil underneath, then fold it over the crust.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 5 months ago

What worked for me is the microwave despite it being not recommended desite most people using it anyway. I cooked it using defrost which I actually do with a lot of foods that benefit from a slow cook. Just not good to do with anything that will dry out although sometimes adding a little water will do but like meat its not good to do slow unless something can seal in the juices.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Yeah, it's a bit much, and unwieldy, grabbing a slice of deep dish from the counter by the subway you just exited because you want a snack.
