For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (2023), a Romanian satirical comedy about an production assistant who drives around Bucharest to find actors for a workplace safety video that her conglomerate employer has ordered her to make. Hilarity ensues as she meets various eccentric characters, maintains her social-media alter ego as a misogynistic alpha male, and tries to keep some landlords from exhuming her grandparents’ graves, all the while trying to keep the production on track. This is generally considered the magnum opus to date of director Radu Jude, who specializes in this type of satire. One of the highest-rated Romanian movies on Letterboxd.

After that is Wendy & Lucy (2008), a drama/mystery about a drifter in Alaska who loses her dog after a bout of shoplifting. Where the hell did the dog go? Time to solve a mystery. This will be tough, given that she is broke, has no car, and under suspicion for theft. She is forced to make a series of desperate financial decisions to get the pup back. Director is Kelly Reichardt, whose First Cow (2019) we watched a few weeks back. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.
