Mega parasites already killed off most of the free internet as is. This is is just the last nail in that coffin.
My tin foil self also views this as a direct assault against decentralization.
In the near future it will be impossible to legally run a fedi services under any westoid regime that will pass these clown laws.
I am guessing buying service space in non westoid regime jurisdiction would still be viable but it will a huge cooling effect on the platform anyway. Just gonna be a bunch of radicals and feds shit talking each other.
Yes, my first instinct was that the Fediverse needs to prepare to retreat behind something like Tor or i2p, but even if it could be done technically, it would hugely reduce activity on Fediverse sites. And this might be a good enough win for the forces that want to shut it down.
Technology doesn't solve Mississippian authoritarianism. Social problems need to be solved physically.
I agree. It's at best a dodge. And it won't just be Mississippi. Many Governments seem to be pushing suddenly for ID verification for internet users. This is a rights issue not a tech issue.
