Mainly due to grifters being paid very well for spreading bullshit misinformation and blaming everything on "the woke" via both the algorithm and that angry young men love feeding into that sphere.
I recall the term "social justice warrior" (SJW) being in vogue at the time.

Yeah it was only "PC culture" and feminists "inserting themselves" in game critique from what I remember, and then it turned out gamergate was more or less a test by weird crypto fash how quickly they could radicalize gamers.
