A bird large enough to need an opening that size while still tending to roost in trees...Great horned owl? Bald eagle? Turkey vulture? Turkey? Not many of them nest in holes in trees so probably wouldn't know what to do with a box.

Yeah, we have a barred owl living nearby that would absolutely love that box. She looks to be about the size of a large cat.

I never really thought about an owl-sized birdhouse but yeah I guess a lot of them nest in hollows in tree trunks so why not?

Owls was my first thought, they would totall dig that box.

Could be bats, too.

Yeah, I suppose even if the local bats had low risk of rabies or other disease depending on their species and food sources, the kind of bats that would nest in a structure like that would also infest buildings.
