Yes the US should defederate from itself. In fact I think a perfect map of the US is broken down not by region or state, but by county. Break the US down into small bite sized chunks so that it has no choice but to fight amongst itself until the end of time
Turning the US into a much larger version of the HRE with infinitely more guns is such an interesting concept.
