I don't know shit about this conflict. Anyone on Lemmy got a helpful take?
I'll help you.
Since the soviet unions dissolution in 1991. Soviet satellite states went independent shortly after. The nagorno karabakh area was hotly contested, both Armenians and Azeris lived kinda throughout each other's lands, before and during the collapse both sides were opting for independence. However before that armenians were heavily prejudiced against by both Azeris and Russians. Essentially rioting and violent confrontation led to a pogrom of Armenians in azerbaijan held territory. So the Armenians since 1988 fought against azerbaijan and took the nk area by force nearly dominating Baku before a cease fire in 1994 was signed....of course short lived. By 2019 all land that was once taken by Armenians has been surrendered back to azerbaijan.
If it helps, armenia is a majority Christian religion and azerbaijan is majority Muslim.
Ohh interesting. So they Armenian Genocide was a part of that pogrom? They're super vocal about it here in the Armenian pockets in my town.
There's been mass graves on both sides by both sides.. so yeah
Horrible. Thank you for the crash course.
