I wonder what kind of long term damage this will do to the US, why the fuck did shit like this have to happen in my lifetime.

[–] MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING@lemm.ee 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

US soft power is gone now. The sheer treachery displayed in this Ukraine move has completely lost the trust of all of its allies. There's no way anyone can afford to rely on them for anything now.

The threats to annex Canada and Greenland are the bigger breaches of trust than the moves around Ukraine.

Because not enough Americans voted against Trump. It's entirely their fault.

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 59 points 3 days ago (3 children)

No, no. "The non-fascist candidate wasn't exciting enough! It's the Democrats' fault I stayed home while my country burned."

People like those who claim they're leftists are FAKE leftists as far as I'm concerned. They had a choice between Coca-Cola and hydrochloric acid, but didn't vote for Coca-Cola because they wanted natural spring water. Any real leftist would vote for the lesser of two evils if placed in that situation.

Those specific types of leftists want accelerationism the us. They will encourage you not to vote even. They want trump because they think that Trump will crash the government and the US will either be crippled and unable to exert imperialism or the people will become so disenfranchised they'll experience class consciousness and there will be a glorious socialist revolution. What they don't realize is that companies will gobble up power and the US will become corporate feudalism that's even more awful on the global stage and few citizens will fight back as long as they feel personally safe and can eat.

Well, to a degree they weren't wrong.

The GDR was run by the Communists, but probably not in a way that anyone was hoping for.

The democrats have failed repeatedly to convince the American people of an alternative vision for the future. Obama provided a vision, but the execution fell short. Not Trump wasn't good enough of an idea.

[–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 days ago

Not entirely. Remember, even if 2 to 4 million more people vote for Democrats you can still get a Repulican in the US due to their voting system favouring land over people. It never really was a true democracy, they always needed 55-60% of actual votes for the lesser evil to actually get the lesser of the two evil.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

This is such a gross oversimplification, and the fact it keeps getting repeated is the reason I have no faith in the American people getting out of this. This coup has been in the making for decades, but everyone points to the last 5 minutes as the key point we fucked up.

[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

But then they would've been voting for genocide! You know, instead of a worse genocide and fascism!

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I do think Trump and his party are a but to blame tbh.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

And not the people spreading propaganda?

People arent born hating minorities

You'll probably see the BRICS countries ditching the dollar for their own currency within a few years. With USAID gone basically the entire global South will be looking towards China as well.

Once oil stops being sold in dollars and the dollar stops being a reserve currency, you'll probably start seeing hyperinflation and deficits and debts actually mattering a lot more than they currently do.

[–] ShotDonkey@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

And what has always, in all history, been the most effective metod to deflect from incompetence and one's own corruption? Yes. It will still be a military superpower by then. I hope I am wrong and that the people in the US act swiftly.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm fully expecting American civil war in near future.

When Trump starts to purge the officer corps of the military is a critical moment. Once he has full control over the military, a civil war becomes unlikely.

I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
