Windows/Microsoft's biggest selling point is the backwards compatibility though. It has been the corner stone of their software development.

The point being you build something new and run the crusty compatible stuff in a sort of “virtual machine”.

Right. Just make a super super good compatibility layer so whatever you have next will be compatible and give up on Windows proper. They can call it Windows 360.
