CW: Some of Stephen Gammell's charcoal pencil illustrations are genuinely disturbing. Some of them stuck with me throughout childhood, and they had lasting power on new readers as well, year after year of the classes I taught. There was a re-release of the book trilogy with a different artist (perhaps for the best, overall, especially with younger readers), but they don't hit nearly the same as Gammell's work.
